What is a vaccine passport?

While setting out its new ‘Covid roadmap’, the UK government has mentioned the possibility of introducing ‘Covid-status certification’, or ‘vaccine passports’. These will be documents proving a person has had the Covid vaccine, and could become mandatory to enter public venues like pubs and theatres.

Which countries have vaccine passports and will I need one to travel?

It is more likely still that a vaccine passport will be needed for international travel at some point in the near future, as a way of safely reopening borders for leisure and business travellers without risking the spread of Covid – and some countries are expected to require proof of vaccination before allowing entry.

The idea is particularly popular with countries with large tourist industries, like Greece.

Do I need a vaccine passport to enter the EU?

At the moment, Covid 'vaccine passports' are still in the ideas stage and do not officially exist. While it seems like likely that they will appear in some form in the future, it's not possible to say when.

When they do, it is almost certain you'll need one to travel to most countries in the EU – though it's unlikely that you will be able to enter every EU state with a passport at any one time in the near future.

What is an EU 'digital green certificate'?

This is another term for a mooted EU-specific vaccine passport, which would prove if a traveller has already had their Covid vaccine or not. Proposed by the European Commission, it would allow citizens of member countries to travel around the area, as well as allowing citizens from non-member countries access to the region.

They will be available in paper and digital formats, but there is no set timeline for when these could be formally rolled out.

Does anything like this exist already?

It’s not an unprecedented system: some African and South American countries require proof of vaccination from yellow fever before allowing visitors entry, so it's thought that a Covid vaccine passport would work in a similar way.

Will I still have to wear a mask on an easyJet flight after being vaccinated?

Wearing a mask on an easyJet flight remains mandatory, whether you are vaccinated or not. You will not be allowed to board your flight without one, and you must also wear one in the airport. Your mask must be FFP2 certified, surgical or cloth. Scarves, masks with valves and face masks do not count. For more information, read easyJet's official mask policy here

If you are exempt from wearing a face mask, you must bring a signed doctor's letter or medical certificate stating this, either in a physical or digital format. Without this, you will not be allowed to board your flight.
