Hotel Quinta do Lago Review

Set amid the lush Ria Formosa Natural Park on the unspoilt Algarve coastline, Quinta do Lago (meaning "estate on the lake") is the ideal retreat for wildlife and golf lovers alike.

Most of the 100-plus rooms offer views of the bird colonies on the river estuary and out to sea, while - with four Quinta do Lago golf courses and another 12 nearby - it's well-established as one of the most popular resorts for European golf nuts. The non-twitching/ golfing contingent will find plenty of other activities to keep them happy though, in the tennis courts, indoor and outdoor pools, and treatment-rich spa.

Tropical gardens provide a lush visual backdrop to breakfast buffets on the hotel's terraces, with palm-tree-fringed views from restaurant Brisa do Mar to the sea. The hotel's other restaurant, Cá d'Oro, opens in the evening for fine Italian dining. As a prelude to dinner here, sip cocktails by the fireside with a tinkling accompaniment of piano music in the Laguna Bar and savour every bit of this five-star experience. From €213
