CUEVAS DEL DRACH

There are many fascinating caves to explore in Majorca, but this popular network of caverns is the most enduring and mysterious. The caves are beautifully lit, giving you the best possible chance to admire the mass pillars of stalagmites and stalactites, glittering around you. Lake Martel (named after the man who discovered it in 1896) is the largest of five subterranean lakes in the cave, and one of the largest in the world at about 580 feet long. Take a boat trip on the lake and gaze at the limestone formations while being serenade by classical music.

ST MICHAEL'S CAVE

St Michael's Cave is one of the most intriguing attractions on the Rock. It's so expansive, that for hundreds of years locals believed it was the opening to a passageway linking Europe and Africa. Divided into two sections, the Cathedral Cave (so called because of the cascading rock formation that resembles a church organ), is a spectacular auditorium for concerts, ballet and events, such as Miss Gibraltar, that take place among the magnificent stalagmites and stalactites. Lower St Michael's cave, only discovered in 1942, features a crystal clear underground lake.

GROTTA PALAZZESE
ITALY, fly to Bari

This glorious restaurant, sitting on a platform felled out of a rocky cave beside the azure waters of the Adriatic, must be one of the most stunning-and romantic-locations in Europe. Access to the grotto was first established in the 18th century, when a Neapolitan duke decided it was the perfect place for a party. Now more appropriate for a sophisticated evening, this is a unique place to enjoy delicate cuisine. There's a 24metre drop to the sea below and views across to the attractive town of Polignano, complete with crashing waves and flickering candle light.
