Zurich News & Gossip
What the Dickens?
On 7 February, it will be 200 years since the birth of Britain's greatest novelist, Charles Dickens. And it isn't just in his home country that he's being commemorated. First editions of Dickens's works, readings by the author's great-great-grandson Gerald Dickens, photographs and drawings are all on show in The Mysteries of Charles Dickens (1812-1870) at the Museum Strauhof in Zurich. Thomas Schlachter, the exhibition's curator, believes the author is unrivalled in terms of his impact on literature. "There's no figure in the German-speaking world, or elsewhere, whose role can be compared. One of the titans of world literature and an entertainer of the first water, his social concerns are as relevant today as they were in his own times." The show runs until 4 March, with information in English and German. strauhof.ch
