This Month in Zagreb:

By Robin McKelvie

Shopping: Croatians insist that they invented the tie, hence the name "cravat", derived from "croata", and they sure stock a mean selection of silky ties and cravats at Croata (13 Kaptol, tel: 01 481 4600).

Key areas: Upper Town - This historic oasis boasts cobbled streets, gorgeous churches, a flurry of museums, plenty of bars and restaurants and sweeping views to boot. An ideal venue for idle wandering.

Zagreb Trivia

  • May: Tale of Two Cities - Zagreb began life as two separate communities - Gradec and Kaptol. They grew independently and today both still boast unique characters all of their own.

  • April: Don't mess with Ozujsko! The city's favourite beer is the local brew Ozujsko. Knock it at your peril and don't even joke that you prefer Karlovacko, which is made just to the south.

  • March: Zagreb did not escape the 1990s war unscathed. The city was repeatedly bombed and Serbian warplanes even attacked the Presidential Palace in an audacious assassination attempt.
