Sightseeing: Dizzengof Centre, the most popular shopping mall in Tel Aviv, is to host a chocolate festival that will include chocolate sculptures, bouquets, fountains and much more during the early days of March (50 Dizzengof Street, tel: 03 621 2400) .

Key areas: The neighborhood of Florentine, in the south of the city, is the home of hip students, young artists and craftsmen, and boasts numerous cafés, bars, fashion shops and furniture design galleries. The old buildings in the quiet neighbourhood are unique and make it stand out from the rest of the city.

Day trips: Spicy Way is a herb and spices farm in Beit Lechem Haglilit, northern Israel. Although you will probably need to rent a car to make the 60-minute journey, the effort will be worth it when you smell the wonderful fragrances, taste the amazing herbs and study their unique qualities (spice-way.com).

Tel Aviv Trivia

  • March: The Shalom Meir tower on Hertzel Street was built during the early 1960s. It was the tallest building in the Middle East for 14 years, even though it is only 142m tall, less than half the height of the Eiffel tower.

  • February: When the founders of Tel Aviv decided to build its first neighbourhood, they wrote their names on sea shells and had a raffle to decide whose plot was whose.

  • January: The mayors of Tel Aviv are much more popular than Israel's Prime Ministers - in 61 years Israel has seen 20 PMs, while 100-year-old Tel Aviv has had only 11 city mayors.
