This Month in Tangier (March):

By Melody Nelson

Shopping: Spend a weekend day in Tetouan perusing the flea markets and you'll find the equivalent of pirate treasure - brass clocks and porcelain from the Spanish period or antique Moroccan objects you can't find in Tangier.

Sightseeing: The 16th Annual International Mediterranean Film Festival of Tetouan brings rare films to Tetouan's beautiful vintage cinemas from 10 March (festivaltetouan.org).

Key areas: Visit the Cave of Hercules, where he is said to have rested after separating the European and African continents. The tour guides will have you convinced. Then sup tea at the fancy Mirage Hotel or snack at a no-nonsense fish stand on the cliff.

Day trips: Douar Dalia is a small town along the Mediterranean coast just past Ksar Sghir, a popular beach with a ruined castle. Here you'll find more privacy and a great Senegalese restaurant. A brilliant trip and only about an hour away by white taxi.

Tanja Latina Festival, Tangier

Tanja Latina Festival, Tangier

5-7 NOV
TANGIER

Featuring the heart-thumping rhythms of Latin American salsas, Argentinean tangos and Cuban rumbas, Tangier's second annual Tanja Latina festival perfectly complements Morocco's balmy autumn. Featuring a host of international musicians and dancers from across the Latin-influenced world, the event will take over some of the city's most emblematic venues, presenting a number of opportunities to unpack your dancing shoes. With Flamenco-inspired sounds from the Alzy Trio, the Rio carnival reincarnated with Viva Brazil! and the hypnotic rhythms of Zângăo's percussionists filling the North African air, you'd be forgiven for thinking you'd flown across the Atlantic by accident.

Tangier Trivia

  • March: During Tangier's International Zone period (1923-1956) 13 consuls were based in the small city, with France, Spain, Britain and Italy being the main four. No wonder the place was full of spies and bandits!

  • February: The Grand Socco is also known as Place du 9 Avril, for it was there and on that date that King Mohamed V gave a speech that would lead to Moroccan independence.

  • January: A useful Moroccan expression will help dispel any miscommunication: "Dounia henya, sma safia, rbi kbir" translates literally as "the world is good, the sky is clear and God is great". Try it if any haggling goes wrong!
