TANGIER

Back for its third year, Tanja Latina is a celebration of Tangier's dynamic and multi-cultural atmosphere, and its passion for all things Latin. The festival was the first North African music festival to champion spicy beats from South America, belting out everything from salsa to merengue, samba and mambo, and attracting performances by big-name South American artists. This year's headliners include la République Démocratique du Mambo and Bandana. Held from 4-6 November, this instalment celebrates Argentina's bicentenary (2010 marks 200 years since the country's independence) and a special emphasis will be on the sultry dance that Argentina is so famous for - the tango. There will be informative performances detailing the history of the dance, films about tango at the Cinemathèque de Tangier in the Grand Socco, and the chance to shake your hips to the fiery pulse with some of the best in the business. www.tanjalatina.com

Tangier Trivia

  • May: Perdicaris House, the haunted ruin in Ramilat Park, was once the residence of a wealthy Greek-American playboy who was kidnapped and held to ransom in 1904. More recently, it was used as a location in The Exorcist.

  • April: Tangier's Old Port is undergoing massive redevelopment to turn it into a yacht marina. Do get down there and witness the excavation work being done to reveal the ancient gun tower and Medina Wall for the first time in centuries.

  • March: Morocco was the first country to recognise the United States in December 1771. The American Legation, given to the USA in 1821, is evidence of this long relationship.
