This Month in Santorini (October):

By James Williams

Shopping: Run out of reading material? Then drop into Atlantis Books, a gem of a bookstore in Oia, stocking titles in English and several European languages. It also hosts poetry readings and literary events (Opposite Old Town Hall, Oia. Tel. 22860 72346. www.atlantisbooks.org).

Sightseeing: Climb the small footpath to the rocky promontory of Skaros - all that remains of a once mighty Venetian fortress. Enjoy the fantastic views and watch the ships drifting by in the bay far below. It's on the coast path to Immerovigli.

Key areas: Pay a visit to Santo Wines, a winery that hosts tastings of its Nykteri, Assyrtico and Vinsanto varieties, and also produces sun-dried tomatoes, fava beans and delicious capers (Pyrgos. Tel. 22860 22596. www.santowines.gr).

Day trips: Hop on board one of the many cruises across the caldera to the uninhabited, volcanic Kameni islets. Once there, enjoy a dip in the hot springs and try a therapeutic mud bath.

Santorini Trivia

  • October: The island's oldest name is Strongili (The Round One), dating back to 1,500BC. Today, it is known as Thira and also Santorini after St Irene, its patron saint.

  • September: Santorini is part of the Cyclades islands. The name refers to the circle they form around the sacred island of Delos, the birthplace of Apollo, son of Zeus.

  • August: Santorini's volcanic soil once formed a major part of the island's economy. It was even used as insulation for the Suez Canal, built in the mid-19th century.
