By Renata Kontrec/Rijeka In Your PocketShop: Although relatively new, Zeleno i Plavo has already won several awards for its wide bronze, ceramic, glass and wood items (1A Trpimirova. Tel. 051 322 598).
This month: Rijeka is known for its creative spirit and its spectacular carnival is the third biggest in the world. Carnival season ends on Shrove Tuesday (5 February).
Insider Tip: Club Peek & Poke contains more than 1,000 exhibits of world and local computer history. It's one of a small number of permanent vintage computer displays in Europe (2 Ivana Grohovca).
Key Area: The City Market offers the usual jolly crowds that can be found at markets. Merchants lure customers with local and fresh produce, offering taste-test servings.

February: The first time a shooting bullet was ever captured in a photograph was here in Rijeka in an experiment conducted by Dr Peter Salcher.

January: Rijeka is the birthplace of the torpedo. It was designed by retired naval officer Ivan Luppis and British engineer Robert Whitehead to protect the Croatian coastline.

December: The ship Uragan, displayed at the dock near the Port Authority building, has had an interesting life: first, in the creation of the port itself, then as supporting actor in films such as Around the World in 80 Days and The Winds of War.
