This Month in Paphos:

By Lucie Robson

Shopping: As the goddess of love comes from Paphos, the town is a popular destination for British couples looking to tie the knot. Shop for wedding goodies or simply find out about holding a wedding locally on the beach at one of the best shops in the business, Ido Weddings (Natalia Centre, Poseidonos Avenue, opposite the Almyra Hotel, tel: 26 220 064).

Sightseeing: A short drive east of Paphos leads to Kouklia, the site of the ancient temple complex where Aphrodite was worshipped. Adjacent to the remains is a museum which houses finds from the site, including a large, black meteorite which was used to represent the goddess. Open daily.

Key areas: Paphos has its own street of boutiques which stock designer wear from Greece and Cyprus as well as further afield. Pick up unique clothes and shoes in between a coffee break at one of the local cafés. Boutique street is on and around Nikeodemo Mylona in central Paphos.

Cyprus drink and drive

CYPRUS

According to a recent guide warning drivers about the more bizarre international driving laws, motorists in Cyprus have to pull over if they want to consume any liquid - even water - because drinking anything while driving there is illegal.

Paphos Trivia

  • May: If you think the tasty, squeaky halloumi cheese is Greek, you're wrong. It's 100 per cent Cypriot and is delicious grilled.

  • April: Aphrodite, the goddess, was a local girl, born on a froth of foam at beautiful Aphrodite's Rock, 20 minutes' drive east of Paphos.

  • March: The first Cypriot president, Archbishop Makarios III, was born in Paphos in Panagia village. The village is worth a visit for the scenic mountainous route alone.
