Shopping: Marechiaro is an Aladdin's cave of sunshine treasure, where all the products originate on the beautiful Amalfi Coast (2A Via Asproni, tel: 0789 27497).

Sightseeing: Take the time to admire Olbia's history on the main street, Corso Umberto I, where the restoration of the city's historic pastel buildings is hidden behind rows of lemon trees.

Key areas: Sassari is one of Sardinia's most important cities, and is just an hour's drive from Olbia. Explore the historic centre with its gothic cathedral, elegant piazzas, traditional local cuisine, various museums, fountains and civil celebrations.

Day trips: Don't miss the breathtaking views overlooking the sea from the majestic Punta Cristallo, on the west coast, two hours' from Olbia. Thrill-seekers can descend to the Nepture Grotte - 656 steps down towards the crystal-clear waters.

  • March: While strolling along the main street of Corso Umberto, bear in mind that part of it once served as a boundary wall of an ancient Roman city.
