This Month in Naples (March):
By Tui CameronShopping: The Mercato dei Fiori flower market is located beside the charming Castel Nuovo and makes a great photo op for early risers. It's frequented by florists, so there are plenty of deals. Open daily from sunrise until 9am.
Sightseeing: The 41st annual Nauticsud International Boat Show takes place on 6-14 March at Naples' Mostra d'Oltemare fairgrounds. This yearly event showcases everything from experimental crafts to ritzy racing boats (nauticsud.info).
Key areas: The former royal hunting ground, Capodimonte Royal Woods, is now a 124 hectare public park. Its tree-lined walkways are dotted with statues and fountains, and are the perfect antidote to ever-hectic Naples.
Day trips: The stunning gardens of the Royal Palace in Caserta were designed by the same architect responsible for Versailles, and are well worth a visit. To get there, hop on a Circumvesuviana train north to Caserta (one hour). The palace itself is a short walk from the station.

Presepe nativity scenes in Naples
Naples
While Santa and his elves have changed the face of Christmas forever, in Naples some traditional fixtures are still central to celebrations. Each year, intricately crafted presepe (nativity scenes) are displayed throughout the streets of the Italian city, including along the Spaccanapoli, reliving the scene of Jesus' birth and reminding onlookers of the reason for the season. Look closely, though, and you will see some modern additions: who knew Barack Obama was around in Biblical times?
