Key areas: The Grandmaster's Palace is home to the island's parliament and presidential offices. Parts of the building are open to the public, including the famous Council Chamber and the Palace Armoury.
Day trips: As the weather gets warmer, avoid the crowds by venturing off on a cliff walk in the south. Amble along to Delimara Point and follow the stunning coastline to pretty St Thomas Bay.

Malta Marathon
28 FEB
MALTA
From humble beginnings some 25 years ago, the Malta Marathon is now considered the largest and most popular athletic event in Malta. Around 1,000 runners from various countries - namely Britain and Germany, but also Poland, the US, Morocco, Kenya and Japan - start off at Mdina, the glorious former fortified capital of Malta perched on a hill above the island. The route descends to sea level where runners wind through numerous villages, before finishing in Sliema, with panoramic views across UNESCO-listed Valletta as a reward. For those who fancy a run, but not the full, calf-cramping 42km, there is a half marathon race on the same day, also starting at Mdina but offering a downhill course all the way. The perfect opportunity to work on your personal best. www.maltamarathon.com
Malta Trivia
-
March: Ramla Bay in Gozo is said to be the place where The Odyssey's hero Ulysses met the enchanting queen Calypso. Many scholars consider Gozo to be Ogygia, the island described in Homer's classic.
-
February: Gozo's Carnival, the Nadur (Silent) Carnival, is nothing like the lively, loud and colourful processions found elsewhere. Locals dress up in grotesque disguise and often don't speak in order not to be recognised.
-
January: Malta has had a medical school since 1592, making the University of Malta one of the oldest seats of learning in the world.
