This Month in Menorca (October):

By Georgina Bromwich

Shopping: For pastries that steer even the strongest-willed dieters off course, head to Forn Can Diego, a delightful, old-fashioned bakery (Plaça d'Artrutx, Ciutadella. Tel. 971 380 985).

Sightseeing: The summer season hasn't ended yet, so why not enjoy a trip to the beach? With waters warmed after a long, hot summer, swimming in the sea is a must this month.

Key areas: Take in an atypical tourist stop off at the end of the month: the cemetery. With All Saints' Day just around the corner, islanders spruce up family graves and tombs bloom as they are smothered in sweet-smelling bouquets.

Day trips: Leave the bustle of Ciutadella's Old Town behind with a visit to the calm of El Roser. A church converted into an exhibition hall, it's interior is just as impressive as the works of art on show (Carrer del Roser, Ciutadella).

Menorca Trivia

  • October: Look out for Creación 57, a triple-choc ice from the heyday of the island's ice-cream business, La Menorquina (founded in 1957). The company may not be Menorcan any more, but you can't get Creación 57 anywhere else.

  • September: Menorcan cheese has officially been recognised for its quality since 1985, when it was awarded a denominación de origen stamp.

  • August: In 2009, a record-breaking 12 of Menorca's beaches were awarded the environmental quality certificate, the Blue Flag.
