This Month in Menorca:

By Georgina Bromwich

Shopping: For divine pastries, head to Santa Clara Convent in Ciutadella - every Wednesday, the nuns open their doors and sell heavenly Menorcan cakes, biscuits and goodies to the public.

Key areas: Get active this month and take advantage of the daily discounts on outdoor activities as part of the island's Fiesta del Mar. Whether it be sailing, golf, diving, horse riding, biking or kayaking, there's a cut-price sport to inspire you to get moving (menorcafiestadelmar.es).

Menorca Trivia

  • May: This month, UNESCO will name Menorca as its world headquarters for sustainable development on island and coastal Biosphere Reserves.

  • April: Menorca may be best known for gin, but it also has its own, island-brewed brand of beer: Cervesa Illa.

  • October: Be careful if you head to the western end of Son Bou beach to bathe - pigs invaded the sand earlier in the summer in search of snacks!
