This Month in London (March):

By Amy Dennis

Shopping: Along winding Brick Lane you'll find plenty of shops, stalls and street-food kiosks to satisfy your every whim, but none stands out like Son of a Stag does. Nestled in the Truman Brewery's courtyard, alongside vintage shops aplenty, the store features dark interiors and brimming piles of speciality denims. Boasting the widest selection of male-only denims in the UK, top names include Levi Vintage, Studio D'Artisan and Redwings. Most importantly, Son of a Stag has three of the old hemming machines used by Levi and Lee jeans years ago, which give the jeans authenticity and added durability (9 Day Walk, 020 7247 3333, sonofastag.co.uk).

Sightseeing: Throughout the month the Royal Academy of Arts hosts a fine exhibition delving into the life of misunderstood artist Vincent Van Gogh. Although Van Gogh's work has found worldwide fame, this collection boasts over 35 private letters alongside paintings and drawings, including some of the artist's most famous pieces (royalacademy.org.uk).

Key areas: On the banks of the Thames, out to the east of the capital, lies Greenwich. If too much time in the city has left you craving fresh air, head down the river on one of the ferry boats which leave from Westminster. Take in the sights of the capital en route to the historic spot where the Greenwich meantime is set and the country's maritime history was founded. The Maritime Museum and Naval College are both impressive buildings, and there's also the University of Greenwich, where you can grab a coffee before jumping on the boat back to town.

Day trips: The New Forest, down on the south-west coast, is beautiful in the spring, and provides the perfect opportunity to appreciate the flowers that are waking up from their long winter sleep. Coastal paths, long beaches, nature trails and quaint settlements make this a great day trip, at just two hours' from the city. There are plenty of activities to keep even the most restless youngsters happy (thenewforest.co.uk).

Rhodes Twenty Four Restaurant in London

Rhodes Twenty Four Restaurant in London

LONDON

Every mum's favourite, Gary Rhodes, has nabbed pole position in the clouds with his Rhodes Twenty Four venture. The restaurant sits smugly on the 24th floor of Tower 42 - the City's tallest building. With Mother's Day looming (14 March), any dutiful son or daughter should think about booking a table here to treat his or her number-one mum to some of Gary's excellent, traditional British cuisine while looking out across London. The iconic Gherkin stands so close, you can almost see the begrudging office workers' desks, and views pan out further over London's business epicentre, Canary Wharf, and out to the Thames and beyond. 25 Old Broad Street, EC2, www.rhodes24.com

London Trivia

  • March: Although at just over 1m wide it's London's smallest house, 20 nuns live in the Tyburn Convent in Hyde Park Place!

  • February: Did you know that it's illegal to impersonate a Chelsea pensioner? Theoretically it's still punishable by death!

  • January: London was the first city to reach a population of more than one million residents, back in 1811. It remained the most populated city in the world until 1957, when it was overtaken by Tokyo.
