Sightseeing: Larnaca's European Cultural Winter includes a live performance of A Walk Along Crete by famous Cretan singer and lyre player Vasilis Skoulas. The performance takes place on 28 March, but hurry - tickets will be hot property (Larnaca Municipal Theatre, Leonida Kioupi Street, tel: 2466 5795).
Key areas: Larnaca is built on ancient Kition and there is a fascinating archeological site of the same name that's well worth a visit. Chrysopolitissa Church now stands on the cemetery of the ancient town, which was known in medieval times as Gold Town.
Day trips: Cavo Greco, the National Park at the island's most south-easterly point, a 45km-drive from Larnaca, has stunning scenery and views. Attractive sea caves are waiting to be explored at the base of the headland, but check before swimming in them - the currents can be dangerous.
