By Bev Orton JenningsShopping: Visit Larnaca's outdoor market on a Saturday morning for an explosion of colours and aromas, where villagers entice you to buy their home-grown fresh fruit and vegetables (turn left at the Old Town end of Ermou Street).
Sightseeing: The Anthestiria, or Flower Festival, is a colourful parade of flower-decorated floats, walking groups, entertainment and fireworks (5 May at Athens Avenue and the Seafront Stage).

According to a recent guide warning drivers about the more bizarre international driving laws, motorists in Cyprus have to pull over if they want to consume any liquid - even water - because drinking anything while driving there is illegal.

May: Oroklini Lake is a Natura 2000 site and is important for two bird species, the black-winged stilt and the spur-winged lapwing. In total, 190 bird species have been recorded at the site.

April: Michael Kashilaos, one of the most important Cypriot self-taught artists, didn't begin painting until he was 75 years old.

March: The most famous doctor of the 1st century BC was Apollonios of Kition. He was known as the Cypriot Hippocrates and wrote many medical books. His most famous book, called Peri Arthron ("On Joints"), is about the treatment of joint injuries. He studied medicine in Alexandria under the surgeon Zopyrus, but lived in Kition - now known as Larnaca.
