Oyster Thieves in La Rochelle

Oyster Thieves in La Rochelle

LA ROCHELLE

It's not a good time to be an oyster-lover. A crippling shellfish plague and over-harvesting have caused the price of European oysters to rocket, hitting €18 a dozen in some areas. The higher prices are also making oysters an increasingly popular target for thieves - one heist near Oléron in France earlier this year saw 240,000 (about 14.5 tons) taken in one go, making it the biggest oyster theft in French history. Police have since caught the Oléron crooks, but authorities across Europe say they are staying alert to the threat posed by illegal oyster-catchers.

La Rochelle Trivia

  • May: The city is connected to the Île de Ré by a 2.9km bridge - the longest in France - completed on 19 May, 1988.

  • October: The siege of La Rochelle in 1627 was used as background in some chapters of Alexandre Dumas' novel The Three Musketeers.

  • September: Unlike the rest of France, La Rochelle has historically been more Protestant than Catholic, which was eventually what led to the Huguenot Rebellions.
