This Month in Geneva:

By Laura Mathew, alpineeating.blogspot.com

Shopping: Franz Carl Weber is a veritable treasure trove for children. This Swiss toy emporium has everything from Hello Kitty to Playmobil and Lego. With an adorable selection of life-like stuffed animals, even parents could be dangerously tempted to make a purchase (12 Rue de la Croix d'Or).

Sightseeing: Taking science boffins and beginners alike on a journey from the Big Bang to the present day, the "Universe of Particles" exhibition is an eye-opening experience set within the Globe of Science and Innovation at CERN, the home of the Large Hadron Collider (385 Route de Meyrin).

Key areas: Well worth a weekend wander, the residential area Chêne-Bougeries on the edge of the Geneva countryside is characterised by long streets lined with grand houses and a shopping street boasting attractive shops and neighbourhood eateries.

Day trips: Overlooking the pretty lakeside town of Rolle with its distinctive pointy-roofed castle, the wine-producing area Mont-sur-Rolle is famous for its fruity and moreish whites. Whether by car or on foot, a trip around the vineyards, taking in the beautiful surroundings, is an unforgettable excursion.

Belle Epoque Kandersteg

Belle Epoque Kandersteg

Wooden skis? Rough-hewn poles? Vintage salopettes? These things are unusual in most ski resorts but not so during Belle Epoque Week (22-29 January) in Kandersteg. The pretty Swiss town celebrates the golden advent of tourism in the 1910s with nostalgic snow sports, including antique tobogganing, bobsleighing and curling. There are also tea dances and a costume ball - all in the traditional garb of the era - so grab your gaiters or bonnet and join the enthusiastic locals in recreating a holiday that's reassuringly last century. kandersteg.ch

Geneva Trivia

  • May: Geneva has more than 1,000 restaurants, which is more per capita than New York City! Offering cuisines from Ethiopia to Argentina, and of course traditional Swiss raclette and fondue, visiting gourmands won't be bored.

  • April: Geneva is sometimes referred to as the "République et Canton de Genève". This grand title is not entirely without basis; Geneva was an independent republic from the 16th century until it became a Swiss canton on 31 December 1813.

  • March: Stop anywhere by the lake and you can't fail to notice the Pierres du Niton, two large rocks poking out of the water. The rocks date from the last ice age and remain significant as the authoritative point of the Swiss height-measurement system.
