This Month in Fuerteventura (March):
By Penny MelvilleShopping: The arts-and-craft school-come-shop Talla de Piedra, in Lajares, sells a good range of handicrafts. Not only can you watch various items being made, you can try your hand at making them, too (tel: 928 868 124).
Sightseeing: Carnival comes to Corralejo on 3-14 March. Nightly entertainment is provided by carnival queens, clowns and floats, culminating in a final night of fun and revelry.
Key areas: Just south of the small town of Tefia is the eco-museum La Alcogida. The back-to-basics attraction uses age-old traditions to give visitors a taste of what island life was like before tourism came along.
Day trips: Las Playitas is just outside Gran Tarajal (30km from the airport) and offers a wealth of sporting activities to help keep you fit while you're far from home. Try a course in catamaraning or diving, or simply enjoy a game of golf, a swim or a workout in the gym (playitas.info).

Fuerteventura Kite Festival
5-8 NOV
FUERTEVENTURA
Steadily growing in popularity since a few enthusiasts first launched their kites over the Dunas de Corralejo more than a decade ago, this annual, free extravaganza is now one of the biggest events on the island's calendar. It's the perfect opportunity to see a host of eccentric flying creations within a breathtaking natural arena. Stretching for over 11km along the northern tip of Fuerteventura, the dunes attract wind sports fanatics of all kinds across the year. This month's event, however, should suit the spectators among us: the most strenuous activity will be straining necks to the skies.

Fuerteventura Trivia
-
March: Many Atlantologists have proposed that the Canary Islands are the remainder of a sunken Atlantis, the lofty volcanic peaks having been left behind when the lost continent foundered.
-
February: The Guanches are the mysterious natives of Fuerteventura. Tall, blonde and blue-eyed, they have long intrigued anthropologists - nothing like the dark-skinned Spanish that inhabit the island today.
-
January: Tindaya's holy mountain was sacred to the island's indigenous people, the Guanches. Their neolithic settlements, shrines and 'podomorphs' (carvings resembling feet) show the ritual nature of the site. The mountain is also home to birds and lizards found nowhere else on earth.
