Fuerteventura Wild Swim
FUERTEVENTURA/LANZAROTE
Swimming's hardly an unusual holiday activity, especially in the ever-sunny Canaries, but for a growing group of adventurous types, the hotel pool just isn't challenging enough.
Wild swimmers visit the islands year-round in search of their next rugged, outdoor dip. In addition to traversing inland lakes and river ravines, the ultimate challenge is journeying from one island to another.
Two mass-participation crossings are set to take place this month. Depending on their experience (and bravery), would-be participants can do a whopping 15km marathon swim across the Bocaina Straits, from the Hotel Hesperia Playa Dorada on Lanzarote to Corralejo, Fuerteventura, on 15 October, or swim a
3.5km hop from Corralejo beach to the tiny island of Isla de Lobos the next day. Alternatively, just come along and watch. clubvulcano.org
Fuerteventura Trivia
-
May: Tindaya's mountain is sacred to the indigenous Guanches people. Their neolithic settlements, shrines and podomorphs bear witness to its sacred nature. Podomorphs, unique to Fuerteventura, are carvings resembling pairs of feet.
-
April: The Guanches are the mysterious natives of Fuerteventura. Tall, blond and blue-eyed, the Guanches have long intrigued anthropologists, for blond natives are a rarity.
-
March: The Egyptian vulture population of Fuerteventura was likely established around 2,500 years ago - around the same time as humans began to colonise the islands. The birds' food sources were scarce, consisting mainly of the remains of sea birds, mammals and rodents. For once, human activity actually assisted in the diversification and adaptation of a species. Sadly, however, the Egyptian vulture is now globally threatened and classified as "Endangered" on the International Union for Conservation of Nature's Red List.
