By Mark PattersonShopping: The antithesis of department-store shopping is KiosKiosK, a portable "pop-up shop" designed by Red or Dead founder Wayne Hemingway. It sells unique-design items by local, young creative companies (Pelham Street, Nottingham).
Sightseeing: Do you believe in ghosts? Join in the Ghostwatch special at the haunted Belgrave Hall Museum, Leicester, on the night of 23 December. Booking is essential and it costs £40, but it's well worth it for a spooky evening (Church Road, tel: 0116 253 2569).
Key areas: QUAD is Derby's eye-catching cinema, gallery, workshop and exhibition space. Hide away from the cold in the cinema offering both Hollywood and independent films (Market Place, Derby, tel: 01332 290 606).
Day trips: Enjoy the stark winter beauty of Attenborough Nature Reserve in south Nottingham. After a walk around the watery landscape, get warmed up in the solar-powered Nature Centre with a hot drink (Barton Lane, tel: 0115 972 1777).

Travel News: Phoenix Square in Leicester
EAST MIDLANDS
Leicester's new £21m (€22.8m) digital media centre in the city's emerging Cultural Quarter is a creative hub for new technology in film, entertainment and art. Continuing the legacy of the popular Phoenix Arts Centre, it will screen an exciting line-up of independent and world films and the DM Cube will be devoted to interactive digital exhibitions developed in collaboration with De Montfort University.

December: Gardener Joseph Paxton, from Derbyshire and former head gardener of the Chatsworth Estate was the man behind New York's famous Central Park.

November: While the gunpowder plot events of 5 November are usually associated with London, many of the plotters originated far north of the capital. Sir Everard Digby, a wealthy Leicestershire landowner, was found guilty of plotting against the government and executed in 1606.

October: Derby accountant Ben Pridmore has smashed three world records for mental feats, including accurately memorising a row of 930 noughts and ones in just five minutes. But he said afterwards: "I'm still pretty hopeless at remembering people's names."
