By Gaby Pinkner/rhinemagazine.comShopping: For a second-hand shop with a difference, try Broke. It's not musty, smelly or dark - it just sells the coolest vintage wares in the city (5 Tussmannstrasse, brokeforlife.de).
Sightseeing: The Wrong exhibition in the KIT - Kunst im Tunnel - gallery on the Rhine embankment sees young artists create their work apparently at the wrong time, in the wrong place, with the wrong material (1B Mannesmannufer, kunst-im-tunnel.de).
Key areas: At 240.5m, the Rheinturm is Düsseldorf's tallest building. Visit the observation deck to enjoy a fantastic view of the city below. There's also a brilliant light sculpture displaying the world's largest digital clock.
Day trips: Essen became the European Capital of Culture this year and is celebrating under the guise of RUHR.2010. Visit the Zeche Zollverein in Essen, formerly the world's largest colliery, and find out about this fascinating region, just 30 minutes' north of Düsseldorf.
Dusseldorf Trivia
-
March: Düsseldorf's expansive Hofgarten was Germany's first ever public park, created at the end of the 17th century by Nicolas de Pigage.
-
February: Carnival's annual Tuntenlauf is a catwalk parade of drag queens tottering about in all their finery.
-
January: Düsseldorf's official emblem is a child turning a cartwheel. Back in 1288, when the city won the Battle of Worringen, the children literally turned "wheels of joy". Today, the city holds annual cartwheeling competitions to commemorate the victory.
