This Month in Cagliari (March):

By Dario Henke

Shopping: Throughout spring you can buy some of the island's finest citrus fruits, including tangy oranges and bitter lemons, direct from the producers in Muravera. Not only will you get great deals, you'll be helping the local farmers, too.

Sightseeing: During the last week of March, Easter celebrations start with a bang, with chants, masses and almost daily processions meandering through the ancient parts of Cagliari, in a build-up to the main events in April. Check with local churches for details.

Key areas: Stop at one of the many cafés under the arcade in central Via Roma for an espresso and a spot of people-watching - a perfect retreat from the sun and the sounds of the city.

Day trips: Piscina Irgas, one of Sardinia's highest waterfalls, is a breathtaking sight in itself, but it is also surrounded by a magnificent mountain landscape, ideal for hiking. The walk up to the waterfall starts near Villacidro, one hour by car from Cagliari.

Cagliari Trivia

  • March: Winds from the Sahara desert often leave a coating of "blood rain" over the cars and streets of Sardinia. Although this sounds dramatic, it's actually just sand from the desert!

  • February: Sardinia's Gola su Gorropu gorge is Europe's deepest, and it's only an hour-and-a-half away from Cagliari.

  • January: Italy's own Sugar Loaf - the magnificent Pan di Zucchero, off the coast of Nebida - is 133m high, and Europe's tallest rock.
