BREST

Brittany, in the far north-western corner of France, has a stunning coastline stretching for 2,800km and beaches flanked by granite cliffs and crashing waves. For an area surrounded by so much water, it's no surprise that Brest, the largest city in Finistère (which means "the end of the earth") is a magnet for maritime enthusiasts with bays, islands, boats and phares (lighthouses). The Phare du Petit Minou, built in 1848, is typical of this area, set on a rocky outcrop completely surrounded by the sea. Watersport enthusiasts won't be disappointed on a holiday here - you can get your kicks from surfing, waterskiing, sailing, fishing, or even a leisurely swim in a sheltered bay. Flights to Brest from Paris Charles de Gaulle start in September and from Lyon in November

Brest Trivia

  • May: The Rue St Malo was the only street in central Brest which wasn't totally destroyed during World War Two.

  • April: Seaside Brest is twinned with Denver in the US, which is thousands of miles from the ocean and exactly a mile above sea-level!

  • March: It has stood on the dockside in Brest for 182 years, but now the Algerians want their iconic Canon of Algiers back.
