This Month in Bremen (December):

By Uros Urosevic

Shop: The amazing shop Weihnachtsträum offers more than 1,000 Christmas decorative items to turn your home into a winter wonderland (45 Marteburg. Tel. 042 132 3262).

This month: Check out the unusual exhibition in Bremen's Focke Museum, in co-operation with the National Archeological Museum of Naples. See paintings, jewellery and bronze artworks from hundreds of years ago (from 15 December. 240 Schwachhauser Heerstrasse. Tel. 042 1699 6000).

Insider Tip: One thing that all German cities have in common is the bratwurst stands you'll see everywhere. But only the locals know the best ones. Head to Martin Kiefert's, one of the stands in the main marketplace.

Key Area: Bremen's market is the best place to be this time of the year. Stroll around on the weekend and treat yourself to some of the goodies at the numerous stands.

Day Tripping: Goslar
A picturesque little town in the Herz mountains, where the Old Town is Unesco World Cultural Heritage listed. Don't miss important sights like the Kaiserpfalz castle, marketplace and cathedral.

Bremen Trivia

  • December: Bremen is often symbolised by a key. It is represented in the city's shield and even the city's hymn is called 'The Bremen Key'.

  • November: Ischa Freimarkt is not only one of the biggest, but also one of the oldest German fairs. It was held in 1035 for the first time!

  • October: Bremen merchants in the 19th century were quite an influential bunch. Adolf Lüderitz was one of the first German settlers in Namibia, where a town is named after him.
