By Danny CollinsShopping: Walk along the bustling Calle Gamba in Benidorm until you reach the shopping mall that extends to Poniente Beach.
Sightseeing: The impressive Fallas of San José are a big deal in Spain, when massive bonfires consume effigies of the famous amid dancing in the streets. This year, head to Calpe on 19 March for the finest fiestas around.
Key areas: Stroll along Alicante's marble promenade and admire the luxury yachts in the Sports Marina. Stop at one of the cute little side-street bars for a glass of wine and some people-watching.
Day trips: Take a jeep safari into the hills of the rocky Sierra de Aitana, just an hour away from Alicante. The views out to the Med are marvellous.
