This Month in Ajaccio (Corsica) (October):

By Olivia Kany

Shopping: Located in an artists' enclave, Ceccaldi sells traditional Corsican knives, carved and forged by hand - unlike copies imported from China that are sometimes found in tourist shops. A father and his two sons have been producing these top-quality knives for 25 years (Porticcio. Tel. 04 9525 1387).

Sightseeing: This month, you can see paintings and drawings by Suzanne Cornillac at the Lazaret Ollandini Museum (Chemin du Lazaret. Tel. 04 9510 8515).

Key areas: Odyssée Plongée offers a range of trips, everything from night diving to children's dives to Level 4 formation (Tel. 06 6207 5351).

Day trips: Book an excursion with Parcours Aventure to the village of Vero, where families and people of all ages can try adventure climbing, canyoning, ziplining, you name it (Tel 04 9521 8901).

Ajaccio (Corsica) Trivia

  • October: Despite temperatures often hovering above 40°C in fire season (July-August), at 2,706 metres the Corsican mountains are high enough to support small glaciers year-round.

  • September: Corsica boasts the longest stretches of protected coastline in the Mediterranean basin. The Desert des Agriates stretches for miles along the northern coast of wild and pristine rocky terrain, rich coral reefs and the occasional private sandy beach.

  • August: When you land in Ajaccio's Campo Del Oro airport, you are just steps away from a protected habitat for one of the oldest and most endangered creatures in Europe. The Corsican snail (tyrrhenaria ceratina) was believed extinct until it was rediscovered in 1994, right next to the airport!
