Shopping: Moroccan leather, especially lamb's leather, is among the best in the world and nowhere does it better than Drugstore Galerie Artisanal. Made-to-measure orders for leather clothing can be ready within a speedy 24 hours (91 Avenue Hassan II, tel: 052 884 2495).

Key areas: The strong waves off Morocco's Atlantic coast provide an exhilarating experience for surfers. Even if you're just a beginner, it's not expensive at most beaches to hire a surfboard and wetsuit and pay for some lessons. Anchor Point and Devil's Rock near Taghazout are popular surf spots.

Agadir Trivia

  • May: Tree-climbing goats in Morocco? Watch out for this spectacular activity where goats actually climb the Argan trees in search of nuts.

  • April: The hill overlooking Agadir Bay lights up at night with fluorescent Arabic writing, which translates to "God, King and country".

  • March: Mint tea, a refreshing Moroccan beverage, is made from green tea with the addition of mint leaves and enough sugar to satisfy a sweet tooth for a month or so. It's offered to visitors as a drink of hospitality and it would be considered impolite for guests to refuse.
