This Month in Agadir (March):

By Anne Imisliou

Shopping: In Agadir most tourists are kitted out in funky surfwear. Keep up with them all with a trip to Rip Curl and treat yourself to a new board, bikini or just a plain old watch (Avenue des FAR, Centreville, tel: 0528 827 154).

Sightseeing: The Morrocan Classic Car Rally revs in to action on 13 March and roars through Agadir on the 15th. Stand by the sidelines and cheer on some truly beautiful old bangers (rallye-maroc-classic.com).

Key areas: The town's new purpose-built marina, with its trendy restaurants, cafés, boutiques and shops, provides a very attractive setting for a wander at any time of the day, but is particularly lovely at sundown.

Day trips: Aourir, commonly known as Banana Village (for its delicious bananas) is only 12km north of Agadir. Banana Beach and Devil's Rock are very popular surf beaches, and are great for a spring stroll, plus there's also a local market every Wednesday.

Agadir Trivia

  • March: Some 2.5m people currently live in the wild climes of the Sahara desert. Most live in Morocco, Egypt and Algeria.

  • February: Every Friday, households all over Morocco enjoy a traditional national dish consisting of lamb or chicken served on a bed of couscous topped with a layer of juicy vegetables, all moistened with a savoury sauce.

  • January: Traditional babouche slippers may be perceived as a souvenir gimmick, but many Moroccans still wear them - men wear the original yellow style, while ornate patterns are reserved for women.
