This Month in Casablanca (March):

By Cara Warkentin

Shopping: Diamantine stores can be found all over the city. Pick up some Moroccan kaftans, shawls, scarves and, of course, the right accessories to complete the look. The main store is on Boulevard d'Anfa (tel: 0522 204 798).

Sightseeing: The Orchestre Philharmonique du Maroc will perform a variety of concerts throughout March during the 10th Annual International Music of Morocco competition. One date to note is the 7th, when a piano concert is set to wow the crowds (Theatre Mohammed VI, opm.ma).

Key areas: Bouskoura Forest offers city dwellers a breath of fresh air. Ignore the mess left by picnickers near the entrance and keep walking towards the cleaner and more peaceful plains. Fresh bread and produce is available from neighbouring villagers.

Day trips: A 30-minute drive south on the coastal road takes you to Azemmour, a town built on the banks of Morocco's biggest river - the Oued Oum er Rbia. There's an interesting old Jewish quarter to stroll around and the 16th-century Portuguese rampart around the town is still intact.

Casablanca Trivia

  • March: About 55% of all air traffic in Morocco is concentrated in Casablanca.

  • February: Alcohol consumption is against religious law, however, wine, beer and spirits are produced in Morocco and sold almost everywhere (albeit discreetly) other than inside the walled medina. Expect to pay more than at home - especially in a restaurant or bar.

  • January: Due to recent "Arabisation", many of the city's French street names have been changed. Don't get confused if you see a street with two or more names.
